Last time I had my racquet restrung, I went with Wilson NXT 16, since that's what Wilson (the racquet manufacturer) recommends for the frame. It's a multifilament string, with lots and lots of tiny fibers twisted around a four medium fibers and a pair of oblong monofilaments twisted in a double helix. Multifilament strings generally score well on comfort and touch but poorly on wear and ability to maintain their tension, and that was the case for me:

I try to hit with a good bit of spin, so the main strings in my racquet tend to slide back and forth across the crosses. With a multifilament, that can break up the tiny threads that surround the core and as you can see, leave it exposed. I'm impressed by the core filaments' tenacity, as I've played for about four hours with it looking like that and they haven't snapped.

But for me, the NXT doesn't feel much different than a bottom-of-the-line synthetic gut, so I'll probably save my money and go with the cheap stuff when it finally gives out.
