DB Scare (5 comments)

This afternoon, the combination of a typo in my MySQL configuration and my misunderstanding of how InnoDB writes its databases to disk left me thinking that everything in my blog had been destroyed and had somehow avoided being backed up to TSM.

I was very sad.

As far as I can remember, the (thankfully false) realization that everything I'd written here was gone is the strongest feeling of loss I've ever experienced. Saying that, it sounds like I've got some seriously misplaced priorities, but I think it's justified. Like everyone else, I've lost people I care about, but in every case, I had a lot of time to prepare for it. The blog was sudden.

I'd not thought about how much this means to me. I use my blog to keep track of my life. When did I cut my hair? My blog has the answer. This is the chronicle of four years of my life... so far.

And now it's got slightly more redundant backups, so at any time, there are three copies of the database on eddie and nine on tape.
