Solid-State Lusting (1 comment)

I really want a loaded out Gigabyte i-RAM. The problem is that given current prices, it'll be around $500 for a (really really cool) piece of hardware I don't at all need.

But... no moving parts!

Realistically, the only system that could make legitimate use of such a beast is eddie, as low latency non-sequential access is nice for database indices and email storage. But my database doesn't need to go any faster; it only takes about 1/50 of a second to build the front page of my blog pulling data from the current setup. Similarly, my email's kept on a RAID 10 array of 15,000 RPM Ultra 160 SCSO disks. It takes mutt a little over a second to load up a maildir with 4700 messages.

Wah wah my computer's too fast to justify making it faster.

Wah.
