Last night, my DirecTiVo updated its TiVo software from 3.1.1 to 6.2. The new software is nice, with significantly faster UI response and better organization of saved programs, but I was most impressed by how smoothly the update procedure went. To me, the prospect of downloading a new kernel and application software and installing them without breaking the system seems like a bit of a challenge. Kudos to the QA teams at DirecTV and TiVo.
My center channel speaker arrived today and I'm honestly surprised at how much better everything sounds with three speakers and Dolby surround compared to two speakers and "normal" stereo. I should have a pair of similarly cheap-but-good-enough rear satellites arriving tomorrow, bringing my home theatre to 5.0 surround. The receiver doesn't have a subwoofer channel, so it'll remain at 5.0 for some time. I figure I made up for it with my 4.2 surround setup on my PC back in college.
