Vital Statistics (4 comments)

I watched the original trilogy over the weekend, keeping track of a few vital statistics.

C3P0 says "we're doomed" four times:

  1. EP 4: On the rebel blockade runner, when it's captured by Vader's star destroyer.
  2. EP 4: On the Jawa sandcrawler upon its arrival at Uncle Owen's.
  3. EP 5: On the Millenium Falcon as it speeds toward the teeth that line the exit of the asteroid's "cave."
  4. EP 6: In Jabba's palace, after Jabba laughs at Luke's proposal to barter for Han's life.

Four right hands are removed from their owner's bodies via lightsaber:

  1. EP 4: Obi-Wan cuts off the troublemaking rodent's hand in the cantina (also noteworthy as it's the only appearance of blood in the series).
  2. EP 5: Luke cuts off the wampa's right hand (paw?) right after freeing himself from the ice in its cave.
  3. EP 5: Vader cuts off Luke's right hand in the "I am your father" sequence.
  4. EP 6: Luke returns the favor by cutting off Vader's right hand to end their fight in front of the emperor.

Protocol droids lose a total of seven limbs:

  1. EP 4: C3P0's left arm is ripped off by the sand people.
  2. EP 5: C3P0 is shot by a stormtrooper in Cloud City, and all four limbs are removed from his body (along with his head) to be thrown away.
  3. EP 6: Jabba's old protocol droid (now replaced by C3P0) has its right arm and right leg torn off as punishment for upsetting its master.

Luke is indebted to Han on various levels based on three events:

  1. EP 4: Luke owes Han one after Han returns in the Millenium Falcon to interrupt Vader's tie fighter pursuit of Luke in the canals of the Death Star.
  2. EP 5: Han saves Luke's life when he's trapped in the blizzard on Hoth, bringing Luke's debt to two.
  3. EP 6: Luke rescues han from Jabba, apparently gaining three debt points as Han tells Luke that he now owes Luke one.

And there's one instance of Lando failing to dance well:

  1. EP 6: After he destroys the second Death Star, Lando comes to Endor to party with the Ewoks and can be seen in the background of several scenes dancing awkwardly.

I also noticed for the first time (and I'm sure the internet already knows) that in Episode 4, after Vader kills Obi-Wan's robe, he turns to walk through the blast doors but finds that they're closing. In the shot from outside the blast doors, his lightsaber was never made to glow in post production.

By Wednesday, I'm also going to watch Episodes 1 and 2 and The Clone Wars animated microseries. Notes will follow.
