Hardware Is Hard. (0 comments)

My Athlon XP 3200+ arrived yesterday. After dinner, Mel and I got to work taking apart our entropy and trillian so we could swap motherboards. Mel's was mostly a new revision of mine, since it had been replaced more recently, but it supported processors with a 400 MHz FSB and so was necessary for the operation of AMD's fastest 32-bit CPU. After putting them back together with their new hardware (Mel also got a new hard drive, as hers failed last week), neither system would boot. Mel's had some memory which refused to work with the new (old) motherboard. That was quickly fixed by stealing a DIMM from ford.

Unfortunately, it wasn't just trillian having problems. Rebuilt with the new processor and much cleaner cable runs, entropy bluescreened. I tried again and go the same result. I clocked down the 400 MHz memory, which had been running at 333 with the old CPU and it did the same thing. Thinking it might be a power issue, I replaced the GeForce 6800 with a GeForce 2 GTS with the same result. Replacing the 3200+ with my 2600+ made everything better. I've got an RMA from Mwave and a replacement on the way.

Before work this morning, I sucessfully negotiated with parking the surrender of my B22 parking permit in exchange for a B4 permit. Thus I will park in the new garage next week and hopefully end up with less dust on my car.
