To try and help reach a decision, I've been asking people I consider knowledgeable about my WRX ponderings. So far, these are the (paraphrased) opinions I've received:
I give the Subaru WRX a "two thumbs up" as far as performance vs. value. I would highly recommend this car for a driving enthusiast, or someone who is looking for a responsive, fun-to-drive automobile.

Subaru's all wheel drive is different from most four wheel drive. It's intended for handling, and it makes the car more fun to drive, rather than making it feel like a truck.

So I still want the WRX, even acknowledging that snow isn't a good reason to change my car shopping. I'm looking at this the same way I looked at the parts for eddie. If I get something really good right now, it's going to last for a long time. Similarly, if I'm going to be using this for a long time, I want a car that's a lot of fun to drive. That's where the all wheel drive really comes into play, along with the turbocharger.
