Birthday 10110 Recap (3 comments)
Everyone wants to know about what I got for my birthday, so here goes. My parents gave me a shirt from thinkgeek ("There are 10 types of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't"), The Simpsons second season on DVD, and a nice cobalt blue shirt for the cooler weather soon ahead. Aaron gave me a black-faced CDROM drive to put in eddie (beige drives in a black case are just tacky!) and Sarah gave me a hotwheels 1957 corvette, a Saleen s7, and a Mexican cookbook. There's Spanish text alongside the English, so it has to be good! And Mel gave me a really nice dartboard and a cabinet for it along with four Mathematica shirts and a strategy guide for Grand Theft Auto 3 (now that I've finished it on my own).
My birthday fell on a Tuesday, and thus was celebrated at beertuesday. Mel baked a cake and made a pie. A birthday cake needs to have candles, so Mel brought some. Five candles, to be exact: three 1's and two 0's. She put them on the cake arranged as "10110" and I got the joke. Wendy brought ice cream, and we all had a grand time.
And then people started buying me alcohol. Rick and Marty (from work) showed up for their first beertuesday ever. I suspect they came just to try and get me drunk. With contributions from some other people, it worked. Not too much to say about that, except that I stayed home from work the next day with a bit of a hangover.
There are always a few coincidental things that I like to think are caused by my birthday. Last year, september 17th saw the largest pointwise drop in Dow Jones history. This year, I was treated to a new Herbert Kornfeld article from The Onion where it's mentioned that Herbert and I may well share a birthday. Also on Tuesday, Herman Miller announced that my Aeron is now obsolete (but can be retrofitted). Regardless, it was a good time, and I'm working to get my sleep schedule to conform with working hours again.
