Today was a fun day. Since I put eddie's hard disks and NIC into trillian last night, I'd been trying to decide what to do about the situation. I like trillian the way it is, as a very capable graphical workstation. So any solution to my problem would have to involve restoring trillian to its pre-yesterday form.
Searching eBay for a solution today, I happened to find a machine of the same model as eddie. It was cheap and I won the auction. I suspect that eddie's power supply was the only part that broke, so I'll probably just merge the two machines into one.
While I was debating the ebay purchase, I got to thinking that the IBM PC 365 case design really isn't enough to make me feel good about running a full-time server. It gets really hot, the power supply is low-wattage and highly proprietary, and it's really hard to work inside the case without taking it apart completely. So I decided that it's high time I built myself a really nice Linux box -- something that'll last for a few years. I ordered myself a nice case a pair of 1.2 GHz Athlon MPs, a motherboard for them, some DDR memory, and some assorted cooling supplies to go with the stuff I already have. For $665.69, I'm going to have an impressive, very stable Linux box.
