My sister had the good fortune to talk to a representative of the Woodford County Sheriff's Office this morning. It seems that an explosive device was placed in our mailbox and detonated last night. The friendly deputy was called by our mail carrier and came over to let us know what had happened.
It occurs to me that many of my readers don't live here and would tend to worry about such a thing. Don't. If my last update on texbook shooting weren't evidence enough, it should be noted that I live out with the hicks. A significant portion of the local population has trouble thinking of any better entertainment than getting some cheap beer and destroying mailboxes. Thus our mailbox has previously been crushed by a nice array of different blunt objects (often swung from the back of a moving pickup), and even burned on occasion. They didn't even make a real bomb for the occasion. It looked to me like the work of an M-80 or something similar.
But I move back to urbana tomorrow. The people there tend to be a bit more boring civilized.
