8800 GT Cooler (0 comments)
When I'm building a computer, I try to include as few moving parts as possible. I've found that small high-RPM fans tend to fail long before the parts that they're cooling would otherwise run into problems. So when I bought my current video card (13 months ago today), I chose a passively-cooled ECS 8800 GT with heatpipes and a big radiator. For whatever reason, the impressive-looking cooling solution wasn't keeping it sufficiently cool in my case, so I took matters into my own hands:
It's actually not too different from my 6800 retrofit; I do love my zip ties.
As for why this came up now, I didn't take a photo of the work when I first engineered it, and it wasn't until this weekend that I found a reason to (temporarily) pull the card out of my PC and into the light.
